CLIMATE: Snow in winter, cool summer
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Anytime
COMMENTS: Now a ski resort

Nicholas C. Creede located paydirt here in 1878 and within months there were 3000 people here. It was originally named Chaffee City but the name was changed to Monarch in 1884. There were over 100 houses, three hotels, and many saloons and gambling halls. The Madonna mine, located just south of the current ski resort, was a major producer of the time. Sadly, in 1893, the town succombed to the drop in mineral prices and the last railroad carried off most of the remaining residents. Most of the city was torn down to make room for the new paved highway over Monarch Pass. Submitted by: Ghosttowns.com
