Frederic Revelle founded Revelleville in 1874 when he stumbled across an outcrop rich in gold and silver ores while high in the mountains north of Cripple Creek and just east of Leadville. The town at its peak was home to approximately 1500 miners who risked the high elevations in order to make a meager income from the three mineshafts. Highgrading was often a problem and was dealt with severely at the Honey Mine operations which was the source of most of the gold ore. The gold was so rich in purity that it resembled flakes of honey; hence the name. The penalty for highgrading was a jail sentence which was stiff and long. The death of the town finally arrived in 1902 when the ores ran out and the miners abandoned their workings for Leadville. Frederic Revelle left the town and moved to Cripple Creek where he died a pennyless cardplayer. Submitted by George McPhearson.
