Originally called Murphy's Switch, Romley was home
to more than 1000 residents. The mines produced over $14,000,000 in gold
and necessitated a railroad. The name Romley came from an inversion of
one of its later owner's last name, Colonel B.F. Morely. There were two
aerial trams that delivered ore from the mines (the Mary Murphy and the
Pat Murphy). In 1926, as the mines played out, the railroad tracks were
torn up and people left the town. Today, there is quite a bit left at
the site.
