It seemed to be the custom at the time to name camps that became towns after friendly Indian chiefs. The town of Clifton was started in 1879 at an elevation of 11,000 feet on the Monarch Mountain. It was a silver mining town of no great repute but for a short while produced enough silver ore to justify a three-story mill that was built not far from the mines. It was during this time the town was renamed. Ouray was the first choice. When it became known that the Indian Chief had already been so honored, his second in command was chosen. His name was Shavano. As fate would have it, changing the name was hardly worth the effort. A little more than three years after the town's beginning, the vein that was the source of silver was no more. Shavano folded, its log cabins and stores abandoned. Today, there are a few structures left standing, log cabins that are crumbling with time. Submitted by Henry Chenoweth.
