Sneffels was founded in 1875 and had a peak population of 2000 people. Named after the mountain it is on, this town had its boom years from the mid 1880's until 1891. A $600,000 tunnel was built called the Revenue Tunnel to solve many of the problems at the mine. The road to Ouray was treacherous and narrow and there were many rockslides and deaths. Today there are scattered remnants and a few nearby residents.
