TURRET

NAME: Turret
COUNTY: Chaffee
ROADS: 2WD
GRID: 5
CLIMATE: Harsh winters,and mild summers
BEST TIME TO VISIT:
Late spring to early fall
COMMENTS: Turret is located in a beautiful setting about 12 miles n/w of Salida. It is reached by a fairly well maintained dirt road. There were at least a dozen buildings still standing when I last visited in the summer of 1996. There is one obvious summer home, which was unoccupied when I visited.
REMAINS: About a dozen buildings still standing.

Turret was a gold camp that was discovered in 1897. It had a peak population of about 400. In 1941 the post office was closed, and the town died. One resident,Pete G. Schlosser of Illinois, claimed to be the first man to eat tomatoes and prove they weren't poisonous. Submitted by Rob Newquist.
