COMMENTS:
On 441/SR15 in Osceola County, between US192/SR500 intersection (Holopaw ghost town) and Kenansville (semi-ghost town). Nittaw Road off 441 is a small unpaved street leading to the site, in a remote part of the state. Road is marked, however not 100% sure it's a public road. There are 4 or 5 houses and trailers on it, be careful and respectful of private owners yards. REMAINS: very little |
Nittaw began as a stop along the Okeechobee extension of the Florida East Coast Railway. The name is an Indian word for "Day", "Lone Eaters", or "Night", depending on which translation you prefer. Nittaw became a sawmill town, maintaining a small population. It's post office ran from 1934 to 1937, accepting the mail for nearby Illahaw from 1935 as well. The abandonment of the Okeechobee rail line spelled the end for Nittaw, and many of the other small stops along the way. Submitted by: Jim Pike |
