On SR 480 (Stage Coach Trail) in South Citrus County. Site is on the left of the road. REMAINS: Only the Cemetery |
Population in 1885 was about 250. It had a post office, general store, turpentine still, a convict camp, a cemetery, and a school. None of which exist today. Information provided by the Citrus County Historical Museum. Submitted by: Mike Woodfin Stage Pond was a small thriving community as late as 1920, with a tavern, general store, 2 churches and an Inn. It was on the main coach line from Jacksonville to Homasassa FL and was a Stage Coach Way Station. Other than the Tavern store and Inn there was not much industry in the area and was deserted by 1920 with the cessation of the stage coach and the advent of the automobile. The area was settled by Sparkmans, Sadlers, Leggettes, Casons, Rooks among others. It can be accessed by taking SR 480 from US 41 just south of Inverness Fl and proceeding west approximately 10 miles. It is a well maintained roadway and is easily accessible by all vehicles.
