Sweetwater began in the late 1800’s as a farming and cattle area. The town received a post office in 1893 and grew to include a one-room schoolhouse and a large turpentine mill with its own commissary. Most residents made their living from the mill or thru hunting, tending crops, and possibly moonshine. The post office closed in 1914 and the population has steadily declined, especially since the 1950’s. The Sweetwater Church of Christ, long considered the center of town, was disbanded in the early 1970’s and demolished. Today Sweetwater is mostly cattle pastures and orange groves.
