This fort, built in 1861, is important as the end of Sherman's destructive march and infamous "March to the Sea" during the Civil War. The fort resisted a bombardment from iron clad Union ships until Sherman's arrival in 1864. There is also a Civil War museum on site. Submitted by: Mike Woodfin |
