Griswoldville was founded by Sam Griswold in the 1840's. Sam built a manufacturing company in the NW corner of the town that prospered until the civil war. During the civil war, the factory was converted to a pistol and arms factory. Today, those articles are rare and command a high price on. during the war the town hit a population of 500 and was home to several stores and other businesses. In 1864, one of Sherman's Corps established a perimeter 1/2 mile east of town and burned the factory and Sam's house (on the SE corner of town). Confederate troops from Macon marched to the town and engaged in a fierce fight with the Union troops and subsequently had to withdraw, with 150 casualties. Several skirmeshes were fought in and near the town. Historical markers document the events, and the battlefield has been preserved and is well marked. Today, only farms and a few residents mark this town. The railroad line is a main east-west line. Submitted by: Howard Bacon |
