North of Gainesville. Take I-985/SR23 North of Gainesville, GA to White Sulphur Road and turn
right (east). When you come to a dead-end take the dirt road immediately across. Be very discreet and polite. This is private property and the owner is not to keen on explorers. Take your pictures and drive on through the property to the other side. REMAINS: Building Foundations & Lampposts |
White Sulphur Springs grew in popularity as a health resort. The town dates back around 1846. Apparently it was very popular by 1880. The community lasted until about 1930. The major attraction was the hotel that drew thousands every summer. The owner J. W. Oglesby was fully invested in the stock market when it crashed in 1929. He could no longer keep the hotel up. A fire destroyed the hotel in 1933. Submitted by: Mike Woodfin |
