Kawailoa was a mill camp for the Waialua Sugar Company. Workers traveling through Hale'iwa to and from work created the historic town of Hale'iwa. In 1935 the sugar industry, trying to do what they could about conditions, replaced all the huts with newly designed homes. The sugar company maintained the homes but they were owned by the Bishop Estate. Each family paid $42 per month rent. The area was bought by the Dole Corporation and sheduled to be torn down as soon as residents, mostly retired, could be relocated to the mill camp in Waialua. The camp was to be demolished by 1997. The road is gated and locked as of this writing. Submitted by: Mike Woodfin
