THE KOLOA SUGAR COMPANY MILL -- KAUAI

NAME: The Koloa Sugar Company Mill -- Kauai
COUNTY: Kauai county
ROADS: 2WD
GRID: 1
CLIMATE: sunny; light rain yearround
BEST TIME TO VISIT: anytime
COMMENTS: This large sugar mill is visible from a distance, since it sits in a large plantation field. The mill is no longer in use, as many mills, because the sugar industry is quickly becomming a permanent part of Hawaii's past. One and a half miles east of Koloa along Hwy 530, one can drive up to the mill's front gate. From there it is private property and abandoned.
REMAINS: A cluster of buildings comprising a large plantation processing mill.
The Koloa Sugar Co., from 1835, became very successful and hired the Honolulu Iron Works to build this Sugar Mill in 1912. As most all sugar mills, an extensive network of plantation trains kept the harvest fields connected with the mill. In 1948 Koloa Sugar Co. merged with Grove Farms Company. The mill is inoperational.
