STRAHAN

NAME: Strahan
COUNTY: Mills
ROADS: 4WD
GRID: 1
CLIMATE: Cold and snowy in winter; hot and humid in summer
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Anytime
COMMENTS: Strahan is a former railroad depot located on the former Wabash Trace Railroad, now a recreational trail that winds through southwest Iowa. There is probably a dozen or so residents and a church. To get to the town, take U.S. Highway 34 east from Interstate 29, go about 15 miles to County Road M16, go past the town of Hastings about another five miles south and there is Strahan.
REMAINS: A church, an old square red brick building and a handful of trailers and houses
I'm not sure of the dates of the town's establishment, but it appears there hasn't been a post office there for some time. The main reason the town is basically deserted is because the railroad stopped running trains along the Wabash line, which essentially did the town in. There are no current businesses or any other signs of commerce. It's just a lonely and isolated rural village now. Submitted by: Paula Beebe
