Started in 1867, the first settlement lasted only a few years. Since then, there have been bursts of activity now and then with the latest occurring in the 1940s. The present Deadwood Lodge is a stopping place for those wishing to explore the old camp, which is located on the upper Deadwood River behind the Lodge.
