NAME: Gibbonsville COUNTY: Lemhi ROADS: 2WD GRID: 4 CLIMATE: Cool winter/snow and summer. BEST TIME TO VISIT: Fall, Spring, Summer. |
COMMENTS:
33 miles from Salmon take 93 north to the
broken arrow resturant and then turn right. REMAINS: Mining remnants. |
Gibbonsville had its start in 1877 after
placer gold was discovered on Anderson and Dahlonega Creeks.
In 1895 a thirty-stamp mill was built and employed nearly six
hundred men. In its early years, Gibbonsville was accessed by
roads and trails over the mountains from Montana. In 1889, a
wagon road down the Salmon River from Salmon City was constructed.
Like many early mining towns, Gibbonsville bears little resemblance
to the boisterous mining camp of the gay 90s. However, the ore
bins and the A.D. and M. mine near Gibbonsville are worth seeing.
