OLD OROGRANDE

NAME: Old Orogrande
COUNTY: Idaho
ROADS: 2WD
GRID: 2
CLIMATE: Very warm in Summer, but lots of snow in winter. Overall, a nice climate.
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Year-round
COMMENTS: Cool place if you like Idaho mining history. There used to be a guy named George that owned goats that lived there in the 80's, but he's not there anymore. We used to call him, "The Goat Man." The town is between Dixie and Elk City, and the road is pretty good over all. There is access to Buffalo Hump nearby.
REMAINS: A run-down cabin, a meadow, and the remains of the Colgrove Hotel
Newer than dixie or Elk City, it is 11 miles from "New" Orogrande. It was an old mining town. There is a creek running near the town, and it's not too far from Buffalo Hump. From 1902-31, an estimated $69,598 in gold was taken from the Orogrande Mining District. It was known as an oasis of trade during the Buffalo Hump mining boom in the late 1890's and early 1900's. In 1914, Mr. Colgrove still had a store, a post office, and the hotel. The last recorded population count was said to be about 97 people, with 16 childern in school Submitted by: Jesse Glover
