Placer gold was discovered on Yellowjacket Creek in the fall of 1869, which led to the development of several quartz mines and the building of the Yellowjacket Mill. The mill was water powered and the wooden flume can be seen along the road. Heavy cables were necessary to build the tramway from the mines to the mill. The cables were a mile long and an inch and a quarter in diameter. It took eighty packhorses several weeks to haul the cables to the mill site. Yellowjacket was in full swing in the 1890s. Many old cabins remain with the huge five-story hotel and boardinghouse the main point of interest.
