NAME: Baker COUNTY: Brown ROADS: 2WD GRID: 1 CLIMATE: Can be extreme in any season. BEST TIME TO VISIT: Any |
COMMENTS:
Baker is still signposted, immediately west of US-73, on the county road to Powhattan, 8 miles south of Hiawatha. REMAINS: Disused elevator, a few crumbling outbuildings, some foundations. |
Baker was established in 1882, and gained quick prosperity, with 15 houses and 8 businesses in existence by the time Cutler's History was written the following year. The Kansas Atlas (1880's) showed a map of Baker, with about ten streets intersecting on a grid, but some of these may have been platted without ever being developed.(All this information is from my memory--I haven't seen Baker in nearly 20 years) Submitted by: Jim Turner |
