COMMENTS:
When we first went to Elgin it comes out of no where. You are driving down a dirt road with fields all around you then when you come down a hill you hit a brick road and you are right in town. REMAINS: Few original buildings downtown and one has the mason stone at the top with the year 1902. At least 5 houses around town are original and photo worthy. Water tower and church. some trailers and occupied homes. |
Elgin sits right on the border of Kansas and Oklahoma. It was founded in 1869. The post office was discontinued in 1976. 2010 census was 89 people. This town was one of the biggest cattle shipping towns in the world and it was a boom town again when there was oil found. It lasted until 1924. There is a sign outside of the community building that says "the town too tough to die". Submitted by: Aubrey Davis |
