Englewood was founded as an agricultural town in 1884. It was known as the "New Chicago" of the Great Southwest. By 1886 Englewood had three drug stores, four dry goods/grocery stores, two hotels, two lumber yards and more. Drought in the late 1890's put a damper on the town and then in 1906 a rancher donated land just north of town to give the town a boost. New buildings were built but then in 1908 a great fire burned most of it down. Today less than a hundred people remain. Englewood looks just like you see in the movies! |
