COMMENTS: This town was once a popular cattle town. A railroad ran through it. The town once had operating a Post Office, General Store, Bank, Livery Stable, Feed Store, Gas Company, Churches and a two-room school. The old store is still standing and the School House is still there. The location is approx. eight miles South and three west of Independence, Kansas. There is also a city cemetery that is located two miles East and 1/2 South of Jefferson. The town was also known for a glycerine plant that was located South of town. There was once an explosion there that shook the windows in the school house about two miles away.I grew up in this little ghost town and always tried to find its history but have not had much luck.
REMAINS: there are alot of old timers here that have lived here for years.
I dont know the dates of this town. I feel that it was in existance because of the railroad depot and cattle were loaded and unloaded. Probably prosperious from 1880 to 1940's. The post office closed in 1964. Submitted by: Steven D. Wilson
