NAME: Dogtown
COUNTY: Usa
ROADS: 2WD
GRID: 1
CLIMATE: Snow in winter, hot in summer
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Accesible all year - best in summer.
COMMENTS: Located on Cape Ann, North of Boston on the way to Annisquam. No current residents and only cellar holes remain.
REMAINS: Cellar holes and rock carvings.

There are bike and hiking trails that go by large granite boulders that have carvings. Carved by Roger Babson. Settled in 1623. Most men were lost at sea and the women all had dogs for company. Located inland on Cape Pond Brook - to protect the residents from sea raiders. Power for the first mill, built in 1635. Decline started around 1750, due to families going into fishing instead of farming. Poor people rented the homes after families moved to the coast. There were several colorful residents including witches and a matador that would fight the cows and bulls in the area until he was injured. Real interesting rock carvings on the Terminal Moraines located throughout the area. Peter's Pulpit and the Whates Jaw are two of the more famous. Some houses were occupied into the 30's.
