Township abandoned when Central Maine Power Company flooded the Dead River in the 1940's. Maine Rte 27, north from Farmington past Sugarloaf USA ski area and town of Stratton. REMAINS: Roads ending at shore of Flagstaff Lake. |
Town named after flag staff erected by Benedict Arnold's forces in 1775 during attempted invasion of Quebec. Some reports of the "ghost of Flagstaff", an elderly resident who refused to move when the town flooded. After all other residents left, he was never seen again. Submitted by: Michael J Denis |
