Founded in 1833 by fur-trader joseph bertrand, at it's peak had 3 large hotels, 3 taverns, 7 drygoods stores, several warehouses, two brick yards, a post office, two cemeteries, a catholic boarding school, a public school, a catholic church/cemetery, protestant cemetery.
