ELM RIVER |
|
|
NAME: Elm River COUNTY: Houghton ROADS: 2WD GRID: 1 CLIMATE: Cold, snowy winters; warm summers BEST TIME TO VISIT: Late Spring to early Fall |
COMMENTS:
Elm River was located on the Copper Range RR, about 23 mi southwest of Houghton, off M-23, near the former site of Stonington (also a ghost town, about which no information is available). REMAINS: A few foundations and timbers. |
Named by the Elm River Copper Company, which organized the village in 1899--all named for the extensive stands of elms in the area. Although it once had over 200 residents, and a post office, the town has disappeared (as has much of its history). Submitted by: Kurt Wenner |
