NAME: Emerson COUNTY: Chippewa ROADS: 2WD GRID: 2 CLIMATE: Cold, snowy winters; warm summers BEST TIME TO VISIT: Late Spring to early Fall |
COMMENTS:
Emerson was located where the Tahquamenon River empties into Lake Superior (off M-123); its site is today part of the Tahquamenon Falls State Park (the Rivermouth Unit). REMAINS: None. |
Emerson was founded in 1882, and named after a timber baron. Its original economic activity was lumbering; after WWI, and the decline of the timber industry, only a few families who engaged in commercial fishing continued to live there. (The post office closed in 1914). After WWII, the land was deeded to Michigan and the park was created. Submitted by: Kurt Wenner |
