NAME:
Freidberger COUNTY: Sanilac ROADS: 2WD GRID: 6 CLIMATE: snowy, cold winter-mild summer BEST TIME TO VISIT: any time |
COMMENTS:
4 miles south of the Huron/Sanilac county
line & 10 miles east of the Sanilac/Tuscola county line(or 16 miles east
of Lake Huron). Intersection of Freidberger & Cumber Roads. REMAINS: Abandoned church, schoolhouse, & store/post office constructed from field stones. UPDATE: Visited 7/5/08 Looks like just one building left on corner. Some remains of structures on the SE corner, but seem to be on private property and too heavily overgrown to get a good look at. Wanted to inspect corner building but got feeling the residents didn’t want me there. Mike O |
From what I've been told, whether it's true or not... It was founded by German farmers. The rich, black soil was excellant for growing crops. The town greatly suffered during the great Sanilac fire of the late 1800's, in wich most of Sanilac & half of Huron counties burned. Submitted by: Marty Graham |
