NAME: Gould City COUNTY: Mackinac ROADS: 2WD GRID: 2 CLIMATE: Cold, snowy winters; warm summers BEST TIME TO VISIT: Late Spring to early Fall |
COMMENTS:
Located just south of US2 (it was by-passed by the highway), in the extreme southwestern corner of the county. - Semi-ghost. REMAINS: Although Gould City still has residents, and a few businesses (which operate mainly in the summer), it is characterized by numerous abandoned storefronts and houses |
Gould City came into being in 1886, and had a post office by 1888; like most towns in the area, its primary industrial enterprise was timber. By WWI, its population was over 300, and it had a hotel and other businesses. As lumber went into decline, the town declined. Submitted by: Kurt Wenner |
