MANDAN

NAME: Mandan
COUNTY: Keweenaw
ROADS: 2WD
GRID: 1
CLIMATE: Heavy snow in the winter-200+ inches, --Cool humid summers
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Summer
COMMENTS: Mandan is located down a dirt-road off US41 (just past Delaware, q.v.); it is one of the few ghost towns to be clearly marked with a sign.
REMAINS: There are several concrete foundations (of the school, the store, and other buildings) in the thick undergrowth and among the trees; there are also a few frame houses--some of which have fallen in, some of which have been "re-habbed" and are used during the summer months.
Although Mandan owes its existence to a mine which was opened in the 1850s, its long-term existence (compared to many other nearby towns such as Delaware) was due to its becoming a major stop on the Keweenaw Central Railroad. In the early years of the 20th century, it had a population of over 300; its post office opened in 1908, and didn't close until 1931. By the mid-1930s, the long-term effect of the mine closure and the shutting down of the railroad turned it into a ghost town. . Submitted by: Chuck Meyer and Kurt Wenner.
