NAME: Mansfield COUNTY: Iron ROADS: 2WD GRID: 1 CLIMATE: Cold, snowy winters; warm summers. BEST TIME TO VISIT: Late Spring to early Fall |
COMMENTS:
There is a small museum which commemorates the disaster which essentially ended the town's existence. REMAINS: The remnants of numerous log buildings. |
Mansfield was the town associated with the Mansfield Mine; in 1893, the Michigamme River overflowed its banks and flooded the mine, killing 27 miners. The mine was sealed off and never resumed operations; in subsequent years, most of the town's residents moved away, and by the end of WWI it was a ghost town. Submitted by: Kurt Wenner |
