NAME: Matchwood COUNTY: Ontonagon ROADS: 2WD GRID: 1 CLIMATE: Cold, snowy winters; cool summers BEST TIME TO VISIT: Late Spring to early Fall |
COMMENTS:
Located on M-28, between two other ghost towns or semi-ghost towns: Ewen and Topaz. REMAINS: Nothing of the old town and its businesses |
Established by the Diamond Match Company in 1888 for their numerous logging camps in the area (and the reason for the name); for about 30 years had a population of over 200, with numerous businesses; by WWI, due to the timbering off, the area had become primarily dairy farms.
