PEQUAMING

NAME: Pequaming
COUNTY: Baraga
ROADS: 2WD
GRID: 1
CLIMATE: Heavy snow, cold winters; warm summers
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Late Spring to Early Fall
COMMENTS: Pequaming is slowly being re-inhabited; there are new residences on the fringes of the old townsite; the school has been "re-habbed" as a private residence
REMAINS: Ruins of two factory buildings, a few standing buildings (former residences), and an interesting cemetery; the water tower still has a very faded Ford logo on it!
Pequaming was founded in the late 1870s by a lumber company; in the 1920s, the town and its mill was purchased by Henry Ford to produce the wood for the Ford wood-sided sedans and station-wagons. Under Ford's ownership, it became a "model company town", with extensive facilities and services never before seen in the U.P. There used to be a number of massive industrial structures which were part of company operations, but most were dismantled (when they were perceived as "attractive nuisances") when Ford stopped using wood in its vehicles (end of World War II); by the 1960s, the site had been completely abandoned (except for a care-taker).
