PHOENIX

NAME: Phoenix
COUNTY: Keweenaw
ROADS: 2WD
GRID: 1
CLIMATE: Cold, snowy winters; warm summers
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Late Spring to early Fall
COMMENTS: Phoenix is located along US41 where M-26 turns northwest.
REMAINS: A few old buildings (residences and stores), and a wonderful cemetery on M-26; this was the cemetery for Phoenix, Cliff, and some other towns in the area; it is definitely worth a visit.

Phoenix developed around the Phoenix Mine, and by the early 1870s had a population of over 500; its post office was opened in 1865, but closed in 1954. On the other hand, Phoenix is not a total ghost town: the store at the intersection is open during the summer months, and it appears that some of the older buildings are being "re-habbed."
