REDRIDGE

NAME: Redridge
COUNTY: Houghton
ROADS: 2WD
GRID: 1
CLIMATE: Cold, snowy winters; warm summers
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Late Spring to Early Fall
COMMENTS: Redridge is about 13 mi west of Hancock, on an unnumbered paved road. Some buildings being "re-habbed" and re-inhabited; the two most interesting items are the small church, and what is probably the most complete steel dam still in existence (park by the road and take an overgrown path to it).
REMAINS: The church, the old hotel, and a few residences (since re-inhabited).

Founded in 1905, its existence was due primarily to stamp mills, primarily for the Atlantic Mining Co. By WWI, it had over 500 persons, and a wide range of services. By the late 1950s, the mills and the railroads had ceased fuctioning, and by the late 1960s it was a ghost town. Submitted by: Kurt Wenner
