NAME: Victoria COUNTY: Ontonagon ROADS: 2WD GRID: 1 CLIMATE: Heavy snow, cold winters; warm summers BEST TIME TO VISIT: Late Spring to Early Fall |
COMMENTS:
Victoria is now owned by the Society for the Restoration of old Victoria, a non-profit historical society, in cooperation with the Keweenaw Historical Park; informative tours are offered during the summer months. REMAINS: Numerous log buildings, including one which houses a small museum. |
Victoria was founded in 1858, and, it is assumed, named after Queen Victoria; it was here that the first commercial mining in the U.P. was begun (in the 18th century); its post office opened in 1899, and by World War I, had a population of nearly 800; the post office closed in 1927, and until the site was sold (in 1971), it appeared that there would be nothing left; it was at that point that local residents stepped in to save the site.
