PHENIX

NAME: Phenix
COUNTY: Greene
ROADS: 2WD
GRID: 5
CLIMATE: Hot summer, cool winter
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Anytime
COMMENTS: Quarry is operating again even on Sunday.
REMAINS: Nothing left of the town.
Phenix was a marble mining town for the only purpose of running the quarry. The marble was used in buildings all over Missouri. When the high grade marble ran out the town moved also. It is pretty easy to find just head north out of Springfield to Walnut Grove. Once in Walnut Grove just look for the old abandoned railroad bed. It is pretty easy to find and follow south and west out of town. It will take you right to the town. There are two buildings left. They were both made of marble and could not be moved. First is the managers house and the other is the school. If you look close you can see marble sidewalks all over the place. The quarry is across the road from the house and a lot of the lifting tackle was still there. I will be there in a couple weeks and drop by for a look and some digital pictures. There is a lot of information on this town in the Springfield-Greene county library. Just as a side note Bonnie of the Bonnie and Clyde gang went to elementary school here for a little while.

Structure across from quarry. Only stone of foundation and stone steps on right remain.  Land slopes to the right to a small creek.  Front stone steps are on the right.  This was a very large house - even for current homes
