NAME: Electric Mills COUNTY: Kemper ROADS: 2WD GRID: 6 CLIMATE: Hot summers and mild winters BEST TIME TO VISIT: Anytime |
COMMENTS:
From Meridian follow U.S. Hwy 45 north into kemper county there will be a small green sign designating electric mills just south of the town of Scooba. REMAINS: Not much remains. A small lumber mill is still in operation and there are a couple of houses that are still occupied. Street grid still remains with street signs (all streets are gravel). |
The town as I was told by my grandfather got its start from one of the first electric saw mills in the state of Mississppi (circa 1910). The mill brought with it a boom town boosting a movie theatre, a doctor's office, gas station, and several other commercial businesses. At its hey day it is said to have had nearly a thousand residents. In the fifties the originally mill was shut down and the town dwindled away with it. Later another mill was built but the town would never be the same. Submitted by: Jacob Overby |
