Amidon was founded in 1910 as an agricultural town. A post office was established in 1911 and named after district judge Charles F. Amidon. The town won the county seat in 1915. The population reached 162 in 1930 and has dwindeled since then. Today it is the smallest town in the country to hold a the county seat. There are many original buildings still left.
