Mapes ND was founded in 1883. Founded by Emery Mapes who then became editor of the Mapes Messanger. At one time there was many business in Mapes, including school, creamery and cheese manufacturing shop, hotels, dry goods store, elevator, bars, town hall, livery, garage and repair shop, restaurants, and churches. As time and money allowed, people left the town to move into the country on farms or bigger towns where the train then stopped. After many fires, the town has only the hall, remains of the last bar and elevator, and a few houses. Two families with an aproximate total of 8 people live in Mapes. Mapes is just north of Hwy 2, East of Lakota 4 miles. REMAINS: Some houses, town hall, remains of bar after fire |
