BELMONT

NAME: Belmont
COUNTY: Dawes
ROADS: 2WD
GRID: 1
CLIMATE: Snow in winter, warm summers
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Spring to Fall
COMMENTS: Few residence...Drive 12 miles west of Hemingford on Highway 2. Turn north on Highway 2-71 and drive about 18 miles to Belmont sign. Drive about 3 miles east on ROUGH dirt road. Right before bridge turn left down the hill and over railroad tracks to get to tunnel. WATCH OUT FOR TRAINS!!! Semi-Ghost.
REMAINS: School, couple of buildings, RR tunnel
Railroad tunnel was built between 1888-90. Widened in the 1920's and discontinued in the 80's when double track was constructed. The tunnel is 750 feet in length. I don't know much about the town other than it was a railroad stop for passenger trains on the way to the Black Hills in South Dakota. Not much there now, but tunnel is worth seeing.
