Aproximately 5 miles east of Winslow and 15 miles northwest of Blair. There are no current residents. Nothing to see except perhaps some old foundations on some of the (now) farm properties. REMAINS: Few (only foundations) |
Vacoma was a small town that existed from the mid 1800's and dwindled away at the turn of the century. The last few buildings, including a school house, disappeared by the 1960's. There was a post office, blacksmith, school, residences and general store. One interesting fact was that the one-time mayor of Everett, Washington, who's name I have forgotten (but he was the mayor in the 1950's or 60's) lists his place of birth as Vacoma, NE. A lot of the local farmers, including my uncle (who has an adjacent farm) remember the town as a vibrant local community center, although the resident population never topped 100, I'm estimating.
