Pleasant Mills today consists of a dozen or so houses, and a historic mansion, a church erected 1808, its adjoining graveyard, and an old paper mill which has been rebuilt into a picturesque theater. It was here that the dark side of a general of the Continental Army, Benedict Arnold, was soon to unfold. It all had to do with a scheme by Arnold to protect the cargo of a schooner from a blockade of privateers keeping a close watch on Delaware Bay and the British naval fleet. Soon word got around of Arnold's involvement and a scandal developed and finally a trial. Arnold was sentenced to a reprimand from his Commander-in-Chief, George Washington. The village was first settled by Scottish exiles who fled Scotland in 1685. During the 1750s the neighborhood enjoyed considerable development as a trading center. Submitted by: Henry Chenoweth |
