Alma's post office was established in 1882, and eventually discontinued in 1931. Alma's history is bloody with constant attacks by Apache Indians. Four men laid the plans for the town whos name was origianally Mogollon. In 1878 the town was bought by Capt. Birney and he changed the name to "Alma" for his mother. It is rumored the town was sometimes inhabited by the like of Butch Cassidy and Tom Ketchum, and the father in law of Billy the Kid, William Antrim was an Alma resident. Today only adobe ruins and the cemetary are left at the site.
