Al Helphinstine and his wife, Amizette, prospected for gold up the Rio Hondo Canyon in the year 1893. The gold was there and they found it naming the town after Mrs. Helphinstine. Others followed and soon the town was born. It was destined to live but a year for there was no inexpensive way of hauling the ore out of the canyon. Gradually the three hundred or so residents drifted away until the town had no residents left. All the buildings and homes were dismantled and the town site literally vanished. Several years later, copper ore was discovered at the head of the canyon and the boomtown of Twining replaced Amizette as the new town of mining operations.Courtesy Henry Chenoweth |
