The coming of the railroad and the discovery of gypsum in 1901 led to the beginning of Ancho. Within a short while, clay was discovered and the Ancho Brick Plant started brick making. The plant grew to eventually 16 kilns. The plant ceased production in 1921, and the town slowly died. The school closed in 1955, the train in 1959, and the post office in 1969.

There is an interesting side note to the brick plant. The company supplied several tons of their product to help rebuild San Francisco after the famous 1906 earthquake. Submitted by Paul Lessard.
