BUCKMAN. Formerly a village and sttion on D&RGW RR, 5 mi S of San Ildefonso Pueblo. Founded in 1899 by H F Buckman, an Oregon lumberman, who built sawmills, and cut timber on Pajarito Plateu. The bridge, road, and mesa bear the Buckman name.BUCKMAN MESA. Santa Fe County. Large lava topped mesa on S side of the Rio Grande between Buckman village and San Ildefonso Pueblo. According to San Ildefonso legends, the hole in the top is one of the four places from which fire and smoke came forth in ancient times. The old bridge here led to Los Alamos Ranch School, now the site of the city of Los Alamos. Submitted by: Samuel W McWhorter |
