BURNING HILL. A fire has smoldered inside this hill since 1891. Much red shale has been hauled from the vicinity to beautify nereby homes. The old lime kiln from which building lime was hauled in pioneer days was near this site. Sightseers still visit Burning Hill, the kiln, and the nearby site called The Meadows. To explain the smoldering fire within the hill. It is noted that the area has some of the worlds greatest coal stratas. It is assumed that one of these coal veins is smoldering, uncontrolled, and will probably do so for thousands of years yet to come. Submitted by: Samuel W McWhorter |
