CAMBRAY. Span. 'cambric or fine linen cloth'. Small railroad vilage between Las Cruces and Deming. Became a water station on SP RR in 1892 when a well was drilled here. Submitted by: Samuel W McWhorter

Cambray is most known for its involvement in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) program of FDR's New Deal during the Great Depression. CCC Workers were housed in a federally owned workers camp behind the general store. Projects included the construction of the original US 80 railroad overpass, maintenance of US 80 and the construction of irrigation ditches and canals. Through the 1940s and early 50s, it was a service stop along old US 80 for travelers heading between San Diego and Georgia. US 80 was rerouted around the mid-50s and Cambray was bypassed, becoming a ghost town. The original CCC overpass was demolished in the early 2010s and replaced with a modern construction.
